No parent wants to think that there is something wrong with their child. But there can be times when a mental illness is going to come into play and the family will need to find the right therapist to step in and make a difference for that child. If you ignore some of the warning signs that come up or assume that they are not that big of a deal, you can miss out on some of the situations that point to your child needing help. You want to be a good parent and provide the best for your child, so looking for signs of a mental health condition can be a good first step to get this under control.
There are a few different warning signs that your child could be dealing with a mental health disorder. These signs can include:
# Sadness that is going to last for two or more weeks and isn’t caused by something like a grandparent passing or another sad situation.
# Changes in being social or staying away from each other, especially if your child was very social to begin with.
# The child starts to hurt themselves or they talk about doing this. This is never normal, even if it seems like they are doing it as more of a joke.
# The child will start to talk about death or suicide.
# The child will have some big outburst of being testy or moody. This one is hard to see with the teenage years.
# The behavior of your child is out of control and it could be harmful to them or to others.
# There are some big changes in their mood, personality, or behavior.
# You notice that they are losing weight or they have a lot of trouble sleeping.
# Your child starts to get a lot of stomach aches or headaches that are unexplainable.
# Your child will struggle to concentrate and they may not do that well in school. They may even stop going to school in the first place.
