Review

Punjabi cinema is best known for its romantic comedies. The punch lines and the comic timing are some aspects of Pollywood that are presented effortlessly on the screen. And the recently released movie ‘Main Viyah Ni Karona Tere Naal’ is no different. However, the thing that makes this piece of Punjabi cinema different from the past released rom-com is that in this movie the writer-director Rupinder Inderjit has painted a beautiful picture of Punjab.

On one hand, very seamlessly Rupinder has incorporated shots showcasing the picturesque sites of Punjab, and on the other hand, he brought into the limelight the ‘Punjabi sabhyachar’ (culture). There is a scene in the movie, where Puran’s grandmother says “Punjab is, was, and will always be the best”, and with this one dialogue, the film establishes that there is more to Punjab than what meets the eye.

Talking of Punjabi sabhyachar, weddings in Punjab is not just a ceremony, it is rather a festival that is marked by sagan, Haldi, Mehendi, and then finally the special day. And all these functions are highlighted very nicely through the music and songs of the movie.

In the movie, we see Manat and Puran always holding a special place for their elders. They do everything possible to bring a smile to the face of their families. Though Puran comes from Toronto, his roots are still very Punjabi. He understands the worth of emotions, of keeping loved ones close, and the more he stays in Punjab, the more he values all these things.

Now coming to the lead cast, Sonam Bajwa and Gurnam Bhullar once again have created magic. Sonam Bajwa’s natural acting is one of the USPs of the movie. Right from being an ideal daughter, to an independent girl, who can fight for herself and her friends as well to a submissive girlfriend, Sonam’s character has different layers and she slides into each with utmost ease.

Furthermore, her acting is being complimented by her styling. Though in the movie on various points it has been mentioned that she is desi kudi, she nowhere compromised on the style and fashion quotient.

Gurnam Bhullar, on the other hand, establishes his cute chocolate boy image. His character also has layers, and as each one of them unfolds, we see a new side of him. There is a scene in the movie, wherein his eyes are filled with tears, as he loves Manat, but can’t tell her as he promised to be his friend and friend only. The pain of losing his love is visible in his eyes, and that is one of the moments that captivate us instantly. He tries to find peace in the happiness of others, as preached by his late father.

Last but not least, the review will be incomplete without talking about their chemistry. There are not many romantic or intimate moments between Sonam and Gurnam, but the ones that are showcased by the makers are more than enough to give you goosebumps.

With this, it would not be wrong to say that the film is a complete entertainer that can give you a much-needed break from the daily hustle and bustle of life.
