An orthodontist is able to do a lot of work in the mouth, but they will need to visit with you or your child to figure out which ones are going to be the most effective. Often they will be able to choose from a fixed appliance or a removable device, and the one that they go with can depend on the issue at hand. When it comes to some of the fixed devices, an orthodontist can choose go with some of the following:

# Traditional braces: Braces are going to come with some small brackets that will be fixed against the teeth using some thin wires, often known as archwires. Braces are often going to be metal, but in some cases, it can be ceramic. There will be metal ties or elastic bands that will secure the archwires in place.

# Lingual braces: these are going to work in a similar manner to other braces, but they will be placed in the back of the teeth, rather than the front. This can provide the benefits of a traditional brace, but it isn’t visible in the front for most people.

# Self-ligating braces: Unlike some of the traditional braces, these ones are going to use a built-in clip, or a door, to help secure the brackets. This can help them to work without needing to do the ligatures.

# Palatal expanders: These are going to be an oral device that is custom-made and fitted to the roof of the mouth. They can apply pressure against the upper molars to gradually expand the upper jaw. The dentist will take the time to make sure these get in place.

# Bonded retainers: While some retainers are removable, others are fixed into place. These ones that are in place will be the bonded retainers. They will have just one metal wire that is fixed onto the back of the teeth to help correct the alignment. They can work well and do not show up as much as the traditional braces, so some people would rather choose to use these to help out.
