Rather than simply being affected by the brutal acts of the Shining Light, Kimiko confesses that she lost her voice after being forced to commit violence and kill other young girls to survive. In an interview with TheWrap, Fukuhara discussed Kimiko's muteness and how she and showrunner Eric Kripke decided on its non-physical nature. "From our initial discussions, we agreed that Kimiko's muteness shouldn't stem from a physical condition. If it were physical, it might be impossible to regain her voice after such trauma. I told Kripke that if we wanted to maintain a sense of hope and potentially evolve the storyline in future seasons, it couldn't be a physical attribute, and he was very open to that idea from the start." Kripke's willingness to adapt makes sense, as he acknowledged feeling uneasy about unintentionally reinforcing the stereotype of the silent Asian woman, despite it being part of the character's original material. Digital Spy reported Fukuhara's response to his concerns: "Even in season one, I felt Kimiko's storyline was crucial to driving the boys' actions. Her backstory, revealed through Mesmer, really motivated their decisions. I never felt Kimiko was overlooked in terms of her storyline, but it was wonderful to see her take on an even larger role in season two, especially since it diverges from the comics."
